(More customer reviews)I switched to the Zephyr Ion after a recommendation from my local herb dispensary about the quality of the product. I was not disappointed and have been 100% satisfied with both the device, its accessories, and the companies great customer support.
PROS: Fast, powerful, extremely easy-to-use, lots of extras
The Zephyr ION is a godsend amongst vapes. It is definitely a table-top device, but one that can still be carted from room to room easily. It is an all-in-one unit, with the main controls and exhaust fans in the base, the heating element in the central chamber, and a small flip open lid with nozzle and herb reservoir inside. The device turns on by a large power-button which is easy to find no matter how blind you may happen to be. The temperature buttons are below the large digital readout which can display in F or C. And the exhaust button is small and horizontal below the power button. All of them are logically placed and easy to use.
After you power on the device and set your desire temperature, the element heats up rapidly and will reach even the maximum temperatures in just a few minutes.
Once the device is at the desired temp, you simply sprinkle a bit of your ground up herb into the large metal bowl (which has a small handle to make it easy to get in and out of the device without burning yourself), place it in the reservoir, close the lid, and attach a balloon to the top nozzle. Hit the exhaust button and the balloon will fill up with a good smokey vapor in just few seconds. A single, half-full bowl is good for about 4-6 balloons.
The balloons themselves are of excellent quality and the signature difference between these and other vaporizers is the inclusion of a spring loaded valve at the end of the balloon. This allows you to load, switch, and re-load bags quickly and easily with the minimal loss of vapor.
Lastly, the device is pretty easy to maintain. After a lot of heavy usage, the screens become dirty, the o-rings become caked with resin, and the balloons get sticky (though they are far more resilient than any other vape balloon I've used). Luckily, Zephyr includes all the necessary replacement items for three complete change-overs. I've only had to change over once in the last six months and it seems, with moderate use, that it will hold up for at least 3 months before you'll need to replace the old components. If you run out, their website allows you to order any necessary replacements, including some items that could become broken from regular maintenance (like the ballon valves and the top lid hinge).
CONS: Large, expensive, valves can be an issue
The device is fairly large, about the size of a 1/2 gallon milk container, and weighs a bit more. It is designed for table-top use and it's best in that type of situation. The box is well designed and includes foam cut-outs for all the pieces, enabled you to pack it up and take it places while still keeping it in good condition.
The Zephyr ION is also a bit expensive, at $250-$300 retail (still a bit less expensive than some of the other "premium" vaporizers on the market).
The biggest problem is the balloon valves themselves. There is a design flaw in the how they are assembled in that, when you are replacing a balloon from normal wear and tear, you can easily break the retaining tabs for the valve. This doesn't affect the over all functioning, but only the aesthetics of it as it will come loose and flop around. Connecting up new balloons to the valve was also challenging and required some practice at first. You may need to buy extra valves if you use a vape a lot and they're not cheap (around $30 each).
Overall, the device is a fantastic product, well designed and thought out. If there is any flaw anywhere, it is a minor one with the valves. If you smoke a lot or have a condition which prevents you from smoking, this vaporizer is the product of choice. You won't be disappointed!
