SPT SF-610 Portable Evaporative Air Cooler with Ionizer Review

There are so many things wrong with this unit that I'm surprised I've managed to remember them all. Some other reviewers have touched base on them already, but here are the details:
* You put water and/or ice in the top of the unit; you cannot put water where the ice is and vice-versa. The area where you pour water into is about 3x2 inches in size (yes, really!), while the area for ice is about 7x3 inches. You literally need a funnel or a small plastic tube to fill the unit up with water (see below). But it gets worse...
* Easily the biggest flaw: the water/melted ice goes down a tube and literally into the casing of the unit! There is no water tank, or centralized hold for liquids. The entire bottom of the unit is the "tank", if you can even call it that.
* The two cooling packs provided contain some sort of cheap coolant liquid inside of them -- they do cool quite well, but here's the problem: they're physically too large. The cooling packs are dropped into the bottom of the casing (where the water is), right into the water. They don't mount inside anywhere.
* The "door" for the cooling packs is too small for my hand (and I have small hands), which makes removing the cooling packs impossible. It took me a good 5 minutes using a pair of plastic pliers to grab a pack and remove it. The door is held shut with magnets, which is admittedly nice. But the door empties right into the water "tank", which means you might as well fill it up from the side and not the top! What were they thinking when they engineered this thing?!
* Water pump is a pump intended for aquariums. If you open up the back of the unit (which you have to do for water filter cleaning; see below), you can peek inside and see quite clearly printed on the pump "AQUARIUM PUMP". Most aquarium pumps I know are loud, not soft/quiet nor do they hum; and because the pump is screw-mounted to the bottom of the unit (which is plastic), I'm left thinking the entire unit must vibrate heavily when powered on. This makes you question the production quality of this item.
* Water refill line is recessed deep inside the unit due to how the plastic casing is molded; it's impossible to read, and it's incredibly important (see above) to not go above a certain fill line. If you go above the line, water will start to come out of the front of the unit, and the rear of the unit (bottom of where the air filter starts).
* The air/lint filter on the back is easily removable. However, to clean the water filter, you must remove 6 screws and proceed to wiggle/wobble plastic pieces until you pull the back of the unit out. Why screws? Why not some retention plastic, or a clip? Better yet, why not magnets like the ones used on the coolant door? You cannot remove it entirely, because attached to it (permanently) is a bright orange hose connected somewhere within the unit; it has no slack. You need 3-4 hands to do this job.
* The water filter itself is what looks to be nylon webbing, identical to what some people use in a clothes hamper. It's just some cheap mesh with some Velcro on it so you can remove it semi-easily.
* Manual states you must clean the water filter every 2 weeks. Yup, you get to disassemble the unit that often. Fun for the whole family?
* Much to my amusement, the drainage spout (if you need to drain the unit) is directly behind where the AC power cord is. Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea?
Should you avoid this product? Absolutely. I'm left wishing I could give this thing negative stars; seriously, SPT should be ashamed for engineering something like this. I realize it's somewhat inexpensive, but what you get for under a hundred US dollars isn't even worth it.

Relax in refreshing cool air in any room of your home or office. The SPT Evaporative Air Cooler rolls easily from room to room, shooting a stream of cool air using oscillating louvers that evenly distribute the air. It sucks air through a water-saturated wick. As the air flows through the wick, some water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat in the air. An air stream is then blown out the front of the unit and is considerably cooler than the room temperature. Since the 3-speed Air Cooler is not an air conditioner, it uses less energy. You can also use it as a humidifier or a fan and still get the ionic air purifier\'s cleaning benefits. Use the remote control to change settings. Best used in dry climates or open spaces. Leave the window or door open when humidity or temperature rises in the room. Add as much ice as possible, and set the unit near you for best effect. Runs very quietly. 10-liter water tank. 120 volts. 60 watts. 12 x 9.45 x 28.4 inches. 17 pounds. Limited 1-year warranty.

To be fair, the product does not claim to be an air conditioner. However, it does claim to cool 12 degrees cooler, which I didn't find at all. I live in a dry Colorado climate, and still it is barely cooler than a fan. You have to fill it with tons of ice to even get that, and it requires refilling with water and ice often. If you don't clean it at least once a week, it starts smelling really bad.
All this effort of refilling and cleaning is not worth the 3 to 5 degrees cooler you get. For that, I'd rather just plug in a fan and not have to worry about it every day. Save your money and buy a portable air conditioner. It's worth the extra investment, trust me.

This Evaporative Air Cooler, Humidifier, and Fan with Ionizer is versatile, lightweight and economical. The Cooler easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in your house or office. This Air Cooler shoots a stream of air with oscillating louvers, to evenly distribute refreshing cool air. Can also be used as a fan or humidifier if temperature is not an issue. - plus get the air cleaning benefits of the ionic air purifier. The remote control allows you to easily change settings. The Air Cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat), so this evaporative Air Cooler sucks air through a wick saturated with water. As the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. An air stream is then blown out the front of the unit and is considerably cooler than the current room temperature! This is not an air conditioner and therefore uses much less energy. The unit works well in dry climates; not very effective in areas with high humidity as the unit utilizes water to cool.

This cooler works great! I bought it for my husband to use in our 2-car garage. We're in Sacramento where most of the summer is in the 90s, with plenty of 100+ degree days. He works on cars so he has to leave the large garage door open for ventilation. Cooling the garage with such a large open area is definitely above and beyond what this is designed/expected to do, but I thought it was worth a try.
We've been impressed at just how well it works. According to the temperature gun it's typically about 10-15 degrees cooler than the outside air (depending on humidity and how long the cooler's been running). It works even better with ice in the reservoir, which drops the temperature another 10 or so degrees. There have been days when the garage is actually cooler than the house, thanks to this cooler.
Normally we use the "swing" setting to cool the whole garage, and it works well. On extra hot days, it works great to turn off the "swing" and point the fan directly at you.
The only downside is that it's very noisy. The noise doesn't matter in the garage, but in the house it's pretty noticable. We tried sleeping one night using the cooler to save on A/C costs. It was nice and cool, but the noise drove me crazy. The fan noise was fine on low, but the water dripping kept me awake. If you're a sound sleeper and/or like the dripping water sound it might be fine.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone in a dry climate who's looking for a relatively inexpensive cooling solution, especially if noise is not a factor.

The EdgeStar High Velocity Portable Air Cooler (model EAC421W) is the most powerful, best cooling portable air cooler for home use on the market today. This is the only air cooler we have seen that boasts the power to provide relief from the heat for an entire room (up to about 150 square feet, based on our product tests). EdgeStar teamed a powerful (yet quiet) state-of-the-art centrifugal fan with an Australian-made honeycomb water curtain. The water curtain allows more water circulation with less resistance to airflow, and the centrifugal fan gently and powerfully "throws" a jet of air up to 25 feet - the longest air throw in the category! Coldest airflow of any unit tested- most air coolers can provide a 12°F drop in air temperature under ideal conditions. We tested this EdgeStar portable air cooler against other units currently in the market, under realistic usage conditions, and its airflow was as much as 5°F colder than the best-performing competitor!

This unit is nothing to write home about but I guess it serves its purpose. I purchased this fan for my small studio apartment. To be honest I'm slightly disappointed. If you are looking for a medium sized unit for an office or small apartment this unit does help.
That being said, don't be misled by the air cooling feature. This is not an air conditioner and will only give you slightly cooler air flow. The fan on high isn't really powerful. The two reusable ice packs are nice so that you can rotate them in. The timer control works well so that you can set it to run when you leave or go to sleep and it will continue to run for 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours. The setup and controls are very user friendly. You can get this unit up and running within 2 minutes of opening the box.
I don't think I would buy this unit again. I'd probably look for something with a higher speed fan or something that cools the air a little bit better.

No installation! Save 95% on your AC electric bill with this 4-in-1 cooler/ionizer/humidifier/fan with a power consumption of 38 Watts only. This year, beat high energy costs with the Kaito Air-Cooler-Ionizer-Humidifier, yet the room temperature is reduced by as much as 12 F in the direct air way. The built-in fresh air anion generator releases streams of negative ions that attract dust and other allergens down and out of the air you inhale. Air feels as fresh as after a springtime rain. It uses the water to cool and humidify the air, ideal for desert areas such as California, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and etc. The drawer-type water tank capacity is about half a gallon, which means the cooler can run for 8 hours continuously or even longer. To achieve higher cooling efficiency, you can even mix water with ice. I just got this thing today july 22nd 2009. Its pretty good. Its basically like a super fan. It will make your room a little cooler than a fan, but it wont make it really cold like a portable ac. I put alot of ice in there and it made it a little cooler. It has an ice box with ice gel inside. Basically you put that in your freezer and put it back in the box, and it keeps the water cold. The gel would keep it colder longer than ice. I didnt get to try the ice box yet, but itll definitely help For $99, its a great fan, but if you want it to be really cold, youll need a portable ac. if a fan is 4/10, then this would be a 6 or 7 with lots of ice, and a portable ac is 10/10. Im going to play with it more and see if I can get it to blow colder with the ice box. I think thatll make it alot better. hopefully this helps. If you buy at air-n-water you get free shipping on it and ANYTHING else you buy as long as its in your cart. I saved $50 on shipping my portable ac because I bought them together. I paid $89 for this with the code summer. Im pretty happy with it and im buying 2 more tonight, but ill stick with my portable ac in my room at night for some real "alaska" cold haha.

First off, this is NOT an air conditioner. If you expect your room to be freezing cold, this is not the product for you. It's a COOLER, and it does its job very well. It works by evaporating water. Try soaking a T-shirt, wringing it out, and putting it on wet to get the effect. It doesn't work very well in humid areas, but it works GREAT where the air is dry.
I'm in southern California, where the humidity varies pretty widely. I place the cooler six or eight feet from my chair, and on the hottest days I'm quite comfortable.
Benefits:
* it's about 1/5 the cost of an air conditioner
* operating expense is a fraction of the cost of air conditioning
* neat features! (timer, sleep function, etc.)
* remote control
Drawbacks:
* it's not freezing cold like air conditioning.

Versatile, lightweight, and economical, this evaporative air cooler easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in the home or office. Unlike a fan that blows hot air and more energy efficient than an air conditioner, the appliance uses water to cool a personal space up to 12 degrees lower than the ambient temperature. The air cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat). The unit sucks air through a wick saturated with water; as the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. A cool air stream then gets blown out the front of the unit through oscillating louvers for even distribution.
The appliance can also be used as just a fan or a humidifier when temperature is not an issue. Easily change the settings with the included remote control. The unit provides an air flow of 23 feet per second, a water-consumption rate of 0.6 to 0.7 liters per hour, and a 10-liter water-tank capacity. Other details include a nylon and photocatalystic filter, three air speeds, a sleep mode, and a timer that can be set from a half hour to seven-and-a-half hours. Though perfect for use in dry climates, please note that the appliance does not work very effectively in areas with high humidity since it utilizes water to cool. The 60-watt air cooler measures 12 by 16 by 25 inches and carries a one-year warranty.
