(More customer reviews)I suffer from Spring/Summer allergies with sensitivity to other indoor irritants for many years. I have tired other models of air cleaners which I have found to help.
This unit does the job. You don't have to buy very expensive HEPA filter replacements and at its quietest setting you can leave it running in the room where you sleep with the door closed. It will make it possible to get through allergy season without being totally wiped out.
I would like to remark about some of the negative reviews of this device.
1. It is not a house cleaner and does not have a charcoal filter in it. It cannot make a household that has continuous heavy smoking smell all clean and fresh. It is not designed to make up for lack of housecleaning such as vacuuming rugs.
2. The particles that cause irritation are not easily seen with the naked eye. If this unit is operated for a reasonable amount of time the pre-filter will catch the bigger
pieces of airborne junk such as shredded skin particles - the major component of what people call "dust".
The permanent filter will catch the smaller stuff. If you gently knock the permanent filter on a piece of paper this dirt will show. Use a vacuum to clean it out completely.
3. No, this unit does not generate a great deal of ozone and doesn't smell bad when you take it out of the box. Some people's respiratory systems are so sensitive that they react to any amount. Examine the effects of a real ozone generator and compare. The electrostatic mechanism in this air cleaner doesn't even come close. Doing what is necessary to build up your health will reduce the sensitivity.
4. If there is indeed defective units out there shame on Honeywell. That doesn't mean a properly operating unit shouldn't be obtained and given a chance.

BlueAir 650E SmokeStop Air Purifier Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Blueair 650e Smokestop from Sylvane through Amazon and it arrive quickly. The air purifier works great and I simply put it on auto. The sensers in the unit occasionally turn the fan on high, but 95% or more of the time, it runs quietly on low or medium speed - neither are very noisy. Even the high speed is not objectionable in the bedroom, since we know it will slow down in 10 or 15 minutes. I'd estimate the high speed noise as about the same as a window airconditioner running on high, but without the low frequency rumble of the airconditioner's compressor. I've had asthma in the past and bought the Blueair purifier when I stopped taking Advair. I've had no issues since making the switch and feel better than ever.
I'll also say I think the sensors are very much worth it. Otherwise, I'd never know when I can turn the unit down. With the sensors, I leave it all to the machine and it works perfectly. Typically, our two Great Danes come in the bedroom with us at night and the unit kicks on high speed for about 10 or 15 minutes. The rest of the night, it runs on low or medium and we never notice it.
When the unit arrived, it did not come with the Smokestop filters as described in my original purchase. I contacted Sylvane and they immediately notified me by e-mail and voicemail that the Smokestop filters would be shipped to me free of charge. The filters arrived a few days later. I'm very happy with my purchase from Amazon and Sylvane.

Sharp KC-860U Plasmacluster air purifier Review

(More customer reviews)Offhand, I own two FP-P40CX, one KC-150U and two KC-860 units. Suffice to say that I am a fan of Plasmacluster (PIC) technology. While a Blueair MD Pro sits by one side of the bed, a KC-860 sits by the other. An IQAir HealthPro Plus is situated in the family room with a second KC-860 not far away. Lose one point for not retaining the timer and remote control found in previous generation FP models. As of February 2011, the KC-860 is the most powerful stand-alone PIC, room purification unit available to the general public as a consumer purchase. Despite its rather flimsy carbon filter and tested in various bathrooms and a kitchen, the KC-860 does an excellent job of controlling odors so long as the Plasmacluster feature is used. Pre-filter is built into the unit housing (ala Austin Air) for ease of maintenance. KC-860 uses the same exact filters as do KC-100U/KC-150U/KC-850U for ease of filter sourcing. Ion generation crackle is clearly audible on these new models and is likely attributed to greater plasma and hence, ion output. Humidifying filter life can be extended through the use of a silver kill coil within the water tank. Unit can be run dry without the humidifying function in operation. Does not adequately cover stated square footage. CADR = Room Size = 245 Square Feet Area Coverage. Assuming ambient readings, the humidity sensor is typically off by less than 9% versus readings off a Kestrel 4200. Though its one-year warranty manufacturer leaves much to be desired, the KC-860 combines lightweight HEPA and carbon filters, electrostatic filtration and active hydroxyl radical sanitization under a brand name synonymous with good quality over the years. All in all and despite its shortcomings, the KC-860 represents a sane choice in a middle end room purification system that gives mid-high end models a run for their money and then some.

(More customer reviews)I originally purchased two of these purifiers to help keep down dust. It definitely helps in that arena. We then brought home a new dog, golden retriever. We hadn't had a dog for quite some time, so after a few days you could really smell the dog. I put one of these purifiers in "her" room, which is pretty big (we converted our two car garage into her room). The next morning you could really tell the difference. I will have to change the filters out in that unit much quicker than the other one in the house, but it really works in taking odors out of the air. It is a good buy!!

My guess is that this company sells reconditioned products! I contacted the compay that I purchased through Allergy Be Gone in Brooklyn NY. I was told to return the item, but when I went to return it they said that the return authorization number was expired (it was only good for 15 days and that is NOT stated on the return form. Very bad company to do buisness with. Now I am stuck with a broken $200.00 unit. Steer clear of this compny as no one there will take your phone calls!!!! Poor product, Poor company!!!

3M FAPF02 Filtrete Ultra Cleaning Filter Review

(More customer reviews)We've been running two of these units at home for six months now. The amount of garbage they pull out of the air is amazing. The unit is reasonably quiet on setting 2 and much too loud on 3. I'm not sure it is moving enough air on setting 1 to accomplish much.
The only disappointment is the high price of the filters -- if you can find them. Online sources are much more reasonable, but availability seems spotty. I'm hoping this will improve moving forward.

This filter is very easy to install. It lasts as long as I would expect, and it works like I expected. This is my 2nd purchase of this filter through Amazon.

Thermax Mini Max (Large) Water Based Air Purifier/Air Freshener Review

(More customer reviews)I just bought one of these, and have had it running for two weeks now. Here is what you should know. First of all, it was fairly loud out of the box. But over the course of the first week, as the motor broke in, it became a little quieter each day. I was worried that it wasn't doing anything at first, because it really doesn't move much air. But it definately picks up a lot of crud out of the air. The 'clean' water will often become VERY cloudy over the course of 24 hours. The 'smell' addetives they include are not as critical as they make it sound. It cleans the air just fine with plain water. However, if I have company coming over, I may add a drop of the blue stuff just to help freshen up the room a little more.
I finally understand the weakness of a water-based air cleaner compared to the other types. The other ones you can just setup in some corner, and forget about it for weeks. That is not the case with this machine. Because water evaporates, you need to pay attention to this thing every day. Currently, the water goes down from the MAX line to the MIN line in about 24 hours, so I have to add or replace the water every day. I am also worried that this machine will not live very long. It seems cheaply constructed, and I am concerned it might stop working after a few months.
I bought it for a room in my house that honestly does not smell very good. I have tried cleaning it thoroughly, but that doesnt fix the problem. The smell does seem to have diminished quite a bit over these past two weeks that I have been running this machine.
I do recommend this to anyone who is looking for a low budget air cleaner, but with the understanding that you need to keep an eye on it's water level every day. Otherwise, don't bother buying it. It will not do you any good if all the water evaporates.
UPDATE July 2010: I have had this air cleaner running for about half a year now. It is still running. Although the noise level went down at first, it never comes close to being 'quiet'.
NEVER just add water to it. Always dump the water and put fresh water in. How this machine works is it sucks water up the small hole at the bottom of the spindle, and sprays it out the holes at the top of the spindle. The gunk it cleans out of the air will build up inside of the spindle. Eventually these dark clumps will break off and you will see them floating around inside the water, and they can plug up these small holes. You can reduce this problem by putting fresh water in each day insetad of adding water to dirty water.
Cleaning: The Spindle does NOT come apart, so cleaning the crud out isn't easy. I wouldn't recommend adding bleach or some other cleaning agent to the water. You wouldn't want poisonous stuff being spread into the air. I just do my best to clean the crud out of the spindle by blowing into the holes with an air compressor, or sticking small objects into the holes, like toothpicks or twist ties. It's not perfect, but thats about the best you can do without using chemicals.

FIRST OF ALL - I first purchased from Amazon the HONEYWELL COMPACT AIR PURIFIER (MODEL # HHT-011). I liked it and wanted to buy another one. I then saw this Vics model that looked EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE ONE SITTING IN FRONT OF MY COMPUTER.
I took the risk for the MUCH LOWER PRICE and ordered the Vicks model. TURNS OUT THEY ARE REALLY - TRULY - EXACTLY THE SAME/IDENTICAL PRODUCT ... with only 2 Differences.
1. The little inverted triangular decorative plastic tab was colored blue/green to match the Vicks brand, while the Honeywell was the same color as the off white unit.
2. The 'art work' and colors on the cardboard box were totally different, the exactly the same size/shape/type as the more expensive Honeywell. The smaller closeup pictures and descriptions on the sides WERE EXACTLY THE SAME.
ANYWAY ... I would actually only give the unit a 4 star rating overall - that would apply to the Honeywell and Vicks units equally. I have terrible allergies that come and go and it is hard to tell how much good they purifiers actually do for me. But READ THE REVIEWS FOR THE HONEYWELL model and base your decision on that ... if you are considering this purchase.
btw - I just ordered 2 (two) more of the Vicks units today to add to my current 2 ... one for each room.

When I received it, it was indeed the 50150, but obviously an older model, as the product did not match the photo, and the HEPA filter required replacement (the specifications on this page list a permanent HEPA). Customer service immediately sent me a new one, and once again, I received the same older model. While the product seems to work fairly well, buyers should be cautious that Amazon may not be sending you this newest model.
